Derek Hu was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 2009. Since his admission to the Hong Kong Bar, he has experience in civil and criminal matters, both at trial or appeals. Mr. Hu has also acted both as mediator and representing clients in mediation conferences and is a listed mediator of the Hong Kong Bar Association. In addition, Mr. Hu has given CPD lectures on personal injury cases and employees' compensation cases.

In the area of criminal matters, Mr. Hu has handled cases involving Money Laundering, Wounding with Intent, Theft, Dangerous Drugs, Customs & Excise, Trademark Infringement, Immigration Offences, Conspiracy to Defraud, Careless Driving, Dangerous Driving, other Driving related offences, and other criminal matters.
